Welcome to Hartbeat, this week brought to you by

the Dev and Data Viz teams!

We've looked into what makes us feel healthy, and then the exact opposite, as well as this week's exciting release!

Say hello to Chuck!

Yesterday saw the first internal launch of Chuck, our new AI interface for Kokoro subscriptions! This first release includes 2 features:

  • We're using state of the art technology to allow users to navigate our 20k+ questions asked over 5 years! This will find questions and rank them based on how related to your query they are and when they were last asked. This will help give new prospects a much better idea of what topics a Kokoro Subscription covers

  • Utilising OpenAI we've created a chatbot that users can interact with to find out more about what they get in their subscription; reports, webinars, portal access etc

And it doesn't stop here! This is just the first release, and we're going to continue to expand the capabilities, so watch this space

National mental health awareness week

While national mental health awareness weeks has now technically finished, we thought it would still be worth talking about it as it's always worth thinking about! We asked you about the fun ways you look after your mental health

Hannah

Animals play a key role in my mental health – feel soothed just being around them!

I need ‘me time’: I recharge mentally and physically by doing two very different things…

1. Gardening. I LOVE my garden. I’ve spent the past 8 years landscaping it. To plant a garden is to believe in the future.
2. Racing motorbikes. Because what’s the point in living if you don’t feel alive?

So, I’ve always loved doing Yoga for my mental health . . . so much so, that I decided to become a yoga teacher to share the benefits with everyone.

As of today, I officially qualified as a 200hr Vinyasa flow teacher!!!

I find that getting outside in one way or another really benefits my mental health. Usually this is with the dog (either taking her to the local park for a few minutes of chucking the ball, or attending training classes) but for that time I'm completely disconnected from all tech. I spend so much of my day staring at screens (PC, phone, TV) and it definitely helps to focus my eyes and ears on the real world for a bit! I also like listening to music - I have a "chill out" playlist that I listen to while I'm doing evening chores which helps me wind down for the day. I find that the music distracts my brain from ruminating too much while my hands are busy washing dishes.

I genuinely believe it doesn’t matter what your passion is—what matters is that you make time for it. Having something you truly enjoy can make a huge difference to your mental wellbeing.

For me, it’s all about being outside in nature. Fishing is a big part of that. It’s not just about catching; it’s about the calm, the scenery, and spending time in peacful places—often with my trusty companion, Rosie, by my side.

I also get a real buzz from downhill and bike park riding. It’s physical, fast, and full of adrenaline, and doing it with my two boys and a growing group of like-minded friends makes it even more rewarding. There’s something about sharing those moments, the challenge, and the fun that really recharges me.

Whether it's casting a line at dawn or hitting a trail through the woods, being outdoors gives me the space to breathe, reset, and connect—with nature and with others. I’d encourage anyone to find that “thing” that gets them out and brings them joy—it’s so worth it.

I find the greatest benefit to my mental health is to be able to get outside and do something active, whether that’s walking Snowy or working in the garden.  I think that’s why I’m often a bit less happy in the middle of winter and why I usually try and take a least a week away walking somewhere a bit sunnier and warmer in the winter months.

I used to find playing tennis very helpful as well but I haven’t been able to do that much recently due to knee problems.  I also find chocolate and cakes (including doughnuts) can help my mental health but they don’t do much for physical health and I’m trying to avoid eating too much of them to get fitter and back to playing tennis.

I think this one photo (below) captures the things I love doing every week that I feel helps protect my mental health -

  • an early morning jog

  • with my dog Marley

  • photographing the sun rises

Not counting a Friday pwp, music is the thing that helps my mental wellbeing the most. Live music is my biggest passion, so I'm going to 2 festivals in the next 4 weeks (Slam Dunk and Download), and also playing music, which I'm not giving enough attention to these days after finding myself band-less once again, so mental health awareness week has really reminded me I need to put more effort in to that!
Also, here's a picture of my pets because, for the most part, I think they are good for my mental wellbeing, no matter how hard they try not to be.

It's National Doughnut Week

National Doughnut Week is a very special week where businesses including bakers, coffee shops, and offices take part and sell lots of delicious doughnuts to raise funds for The Children’s Trust.

So if you are wondering what to treat yourself with on the first day of a long weekend, go get yourself a doughnut and you're basically doing charity work!

To get in the spirit of things, here are a bunch of facts about the most hole-y of snacks, but be careful because not all of them are true (disclaimer, I used ChatGPT for this so there's a chance absolutely none of them are true)

  • In 1847, a 16-year-old sea captain named Hanson Gregory is said to have punched the hole in the center of a traditional doughnut, creating today’s familiar ring shape.

  • The word “doughnut” first appeared in print (as “dough-nuts”) in an American cookbook in 1809.

  • In 1920, Russian immigrant Adolph Levitt patented the first automated doughnut-making machine, revolutionizing mass production at New York City’s Lafayette Street Bakery.

  • National Doughnut Day was inaugurated in 1938 by the Salvation Army in Chicago to raise funds for social-service programs during the Great Depression.

  • The world’s priciest doughnut debuted in 2012: a $1,000 creation encrusted with edible gold leaf and Tahitian vanilla bean glaze.

  • Americans consume roughly 10 billion doughnuts every year—enough to circle the Earth nearly four times if placed end to end.

  • In Germany (and parts of Austria), the jam-filled doughnut known as a “Berliner” is traditionally eaten on New Year’s Eve for good luck.

  • In 1995, NASA developed a zero-gravity doughnut baker for Space Shuttle missions so astronauts could enjoy fresh pastries in orbit.

  • During medieval France, ring-shaped fried dough was occasionally used by court minstrels as a makeshift percussion instrument.

  • The smallest doughnut ever “baked” measures just 0.5 mm across and was created by nanotechnology researchers as a novelty.

Social update!
